From the President - Liane Joubert

Welcome to 2024 - a busy year ahead.

I am sure for most of you, as it’s been for me, the start of 2024 has been a whirlwind of “to do lists”. We are approaching March and I still somehow think we’re in January.

Many P&Cs have had their AGMs in the last couple of weeks and I would like to welcome and thank our new and ongoing committee members for their dedication.

On the business end of Council, we’ve had our first Executive, as well as General, Meeting and I have to say I am excited about the plans for 2024.

This year is an election year, which means as Council, we have been working on our election priorities.

Council will strongly lobby ACT election candidates in the following areas:

  • Support for students – to enable all students to achieve their full potential
  • School infrastructure – new schools in growth areas, as well as upgrades and maintenance in existing schools
  •  An equitable public education system – greater consistency in offerings, and staffing across all schools
  • Increased support for parents and P&Cs.

We will continue to meet with Education spokespeople across the three major ACT parties.

We have also made a submission to the Literacy and Numeracy Inquiry. Parents have told us they want more consistency across ACT public schools, resources to meet individual student needs, clear communication and support for parents and evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. In total, Council is making nine recommendations in our submission to this inquiry.

I’m excited to see what our P&Cs are planning for the year and hope that your volunteering brings you the opportunity to meet likeminded individuals.
