“The Gonski funding model was extremely carefully considered, with an independent panel and input from experts and all stakeholders,” said Council president Vivienne Pearce. “It represents the view of all stakeholders – parents, educators and administrators in the public, catholic and independent school systems. It was widely accepted and welcomed.”
“Parents are disappointed. Our understanding, in the lead up to the federal election, was that a liberal government would honour the Gonski model for four years,” she said.
“There is wide support for this model among parents. The extra funds were being anticipated.”
Council is also concerned about the timetable and process for developing a replacement funding model.
“Minister Pyne says that he will have a different funding model in place by the end of next year. Where is the careful consideration? Where is the stakeholder input?”
“Properly funding our schools is so important. Funds must be targeted to where the need is greatest, and public schools educate a disproportionate majority of students who need that extra bit of help. We want to see funding decisions made carefully and as independently as possible,” said Ms Pearce. “We call upon Minister Pyne to honour four years of Gonski funding.”
